The Newton Community School District is fortunate to have
a supportive community that is a partner in the education

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS
JOSH CANTU
Board Vice- President
Mr. Cantu has lived in Newton since 2002 when he
joined Pella Corporation in an engineering role. He
holds an undergraduate degree from Iowa State
University in Mechanical Engineering and a
graduate degree from the University of Iowa in
Business Administration.

We are a collaborative and cohesive team that
inspires and supports all learners in a culture
of safety and acceptance.
DONNA COOK
Board Member
Ms. Cook grew up in Newton and is a graduate of
the Newton Community School District. She holds
a Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing from the
University of Iowa, and is retired. Ms. Cook is pas-
sionate about family and community involvement in
public education and has served on the local, state,
and national Parent Teacher Association.
GRAHAM SULLIVAN
Board Member
Graham Sullivan is the former Executive Director of
Newton Main Street and is a third generation
resident of Newton. She is an avid volunteer and is
the Treasurer of the Newton Community Education
)RXQGDWLRQDQH[RIÀFLRRIWKH1HZWRQ
Development Corporation Board and the Newton
Housing Development Corporation Board.
TRAVIS PADGET
Board Member
Travis Padget was born and raised in Newton. After
graduating from Newton High School in 1991, Travis
went to Germany as a Foreign Exchange Student,
then returned to Iowa to attend Cornell College in
Mt. Vernon. While at Cornell College, Travis studied
Art, Psychology, and Theatre. Travis moved to
Boston in 1996 to work on a Masters Degree in
Mental Health Counseling at Boston College.
CODY MUHS
Board President
Cody Muhs is a Principal Engineer/Paralegal at
Pella Corporation where he has been for 20 years in
several different engineering roles. Cody graduated
from the University of Illinois as an Industrial
ngineer and received a Masters Degree in Business
Administration from Drake University.
ROBYN FRIEDMAN
Board Member
Robyn has lived in Newton since 2000 and is
employed as a physical therapist at MercyOne
Newton. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in
Biology from Wartburg College and a Master’s
Degree of Physical Therapy from the University
of Iowa. Robyn is a current board member on the
Jasper County Conservation Board, is an active
member of the PTA, and serves on the Newton
Wellness Coalition.
MARK THAYER
Board Member
Mark has been living in Newton and serving as the
administrator of the Newton Clinic since 1996.
Mark is a graduate of Grand View University in 1994
(BA) and 2014 (MS). Mark is married to Michelle
and they have two children, Maddison (Iowa State
University) and Mitchell (Newton High School).
Mark and his family are members of Sacred Heart
Catholic Church.

The Newton Community Educational Foundation exists
to fund innovative educational programs in our schools.
We believe these extra programs inspire, motivate and
challenge our children to excellence in the classroom
and beyond. It is our purpose to provide these enriched
learning experiences for every child in the Newton
Community Schools.

NCEF- WHAT WE DO!
CLASSROOM GRANTS FOR TEACHERS
Over $1 Million+ awarded since our founding in 1989.
To apply for a Newton Community Educational
Foundation (Mini or Major) Grant, applicants must be
a faculty member of the Newton Community School
District. Grant applications are accepted year round,
and reviewed by the NCEF Board with funding
decisions and awards announced in June
and November.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
FOR STUDENTS
Because of the generosity of many donors, the Newton
Community Educational Foundation is able to annually
award scholarships to several deserving Newton High
School graduating seniors. Our scholarships include:
• Amy Doerring Above & Beyond Scholarship
• Princess Scholarship
• Bruce Hoffmeier Scholarship
• Michael White Scholarship
• Trenton Brady Memorial Scholarship
• Betty Ponder Debban Endowed Designated
Fund Music Scholarship
• LaVona Severin Thorsen Scholarship
TEACHER EXCELLENCE IN
EDUCATION AWARDS
Each year, the Newton Community Educational
Foundation accepts nominations and awards teachers
with Excellence in Education awards. We celebrate our
teachers by visiting their classroom and announcing
the award along with the Cardinal Mascot, Big Red!
Award recipients receive $250.00 for their classrooms
and a Star Polisher Award.
WATER BOTTLES FOR STUDENTS
The Newton Community Educational Foundation
generously donated enough Cardinal Red water bottles
for students for the 2020 – 2021 and 2021 – 2022
school years. Kids love that they can personalize the
bottles with their names!
